چکیده

The laboratory populations have been described by CHUNG (1962) and FRIEDMAN (1964). The wild populations came from six localities in two regions. Manoa, Waikiki, and Kapahulu are three suburbs of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Frank's, Kapec, and Capitol are three sites in Madison, Wisconsin. Within a region, the localities are 1-3 miles apart. Each locality was represented by a collection of about 200 females, whose descendants were maintained in 8 half-pint bottles, with mixing at each transfer. The collections included a minority of D. simulans which gradually were eliminated without artificial selection. Basc tests were described by FRIEDMAN (19%). Second chromosomes were studied by the methods of CHUNG (1%2), in which the last generation comes from the mating cn bwD/+ 8 X C y O/+ 9 , where Cy 0 denotes Curly wings and complex inversions and the cn bwD chromosome was selected for high sensitivity to the segregation-distorter (SD) locus (SANDLER and HIRAIZUMI 1959). The grandparental mating was C y O/S 8 x +/f 9 , and various inbreeding levels were derived in the last generation by taking chromosomes identical by descent ( F = %), from the same grandmother ( F = %), from grandmothers who were sibs ( F = %), and from unrelated grandmothers ( F = 0), the inbreeding coefficient F being based on the assumption that the second chromosome makes up one-half of the autosomal genome. In addition, an interpopulational outcross ( H = %) was made in the last generation, where H denotes the fraction of the autosomal genome that is an F, hybrid. This experiment was carried out as a twice-replicated balanced incomplete block design with three pairs of populations in each of five blocks, each pair involving two intrapopulational and one interpopulational sets of cultures, the different levels of inbreeding within each pair being carried out concurrently. The number of chromosomes tested per subset was about five, and levels F = 0 and H = '/z were cyclical permutations of the same chromosomes used for the inbreeding tests. The mating type is called

Homozygous and Hemizygous Viability Variation on the X Chromosome of DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER.

We report here a study of viability inbreeding depression associated with the X chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster. Fifty wild chromosomes from Mt. Sinai, New York, and 90 wild chromosomes from Death Valley, California, were extracted using the marked FM6 balancer chromosome and viabilities measured for homozygous and heterozygous females, and for hemizygous males, relative to FM6 males as a...

Dominance of mutations affecting viability in Drosophila melanogaster.

There have been several attempts to estimate the average dominance (ratio of heterozygous to homozygous effects) of spontaneous deleterious mutations in Drosophila melanogaster, but these have given inconsistent results. We investigated whether transposable element (TE) insertions have higher average dominance for egg-to-adult viability than do point mutations, a possibility suggested by the ty...

The rate of mutation and the homozygous and heterozygous mutational effects for competitive viability: a long-term experiment with Drosophila melanogaster.

The effect of 250 generations of mutation accumulation (MA) on the second chromosome competitive viability of Drosophila melanogaster was analyzed both in homozygous and heterozygous conditions. We used full-sib MA lines, where selection hampers the accumulation of severely deleterious mutations but is ineffective against mildly deleterious ones. A large control population was simultaneously ev...

Overall D. melanogaster Cohort Viability as A Pollution Indicator of the Atmospheric Air of Urban Landscapes

The method of air pollution level evaluation of urban landscapes on the basis of D. melanogaster cohort analysis has been suggested. The method implies the binding to the landscape areas of the city. Within each landscape area traps and cultivators for D. melanogaster have been installed in sanitary-protective zones of various enterprises as well as on the background territory with the least le...

The genetic structure of natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster. V. Coupling-repulsion effect of spontaneous mutant polygenes controlling viability.

ROM recent studies of experimental population genetics, it has become apparent that a great amount of genetic variability is stored in heterozygous condition in natural populations of several species of Drosophila, and it is important to clarify whether this genetic variation has been chiefly maintained by the balance between mutation and selection pressures or by the superior fitness of hetero...

The effect of antagonistic pleiotropy on the estimation of the average coefficient of dominance of deleterious mutations.

We investigate the impact of antagonistic pleiotropy on the most widely used methods of estimation of the average coefficient of dominance of deleterious mutations from segregating populations. A proportion of the deleterious mutations affecting a given studied fitness component are assumed to have an advantageous effect on another one, generating overdominance on global fitness. Using diffusio...
